The Shaw Group Awarded Module and Pipe Fabrication Contract for MMA facility on the Texas Gulf Coast
The Shaw Group is pleased to announce it has secured a
project award for module and pipe fabrication services for a new
commercial-scale methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant currently being built by Roehm
America LLC in Bay City, Texas.
Shaw’s project scope includes the fabrication and assembly of more than 30 modules, including equipment modules and pipe rack modules. The fabrication comprises more than 120,000 total linear feet of carbon and stainless steel. The project is expected to be delivered by the end of 2023.
The modules will be assembled at Shaw’s world-class module
shop in Lake Charles, LA which is capable of executing multiple large-scale
projects concurrently. The facility sits on 295 acres with unobstructed direct water
access (42’ draft) to the Gulf of Mexico and the Intercoastal Waterway. The
site boasts 10 acres of indoor fabrication space and seven fabrication and
assembly bays.
The pipe spools will be fabricated at Shaw’s Walker, LA
fabrication shop. The Walker facility sits on 77 acres and features a highly
optimized layout capable of producing 6,500 spools per month.
Roehm, a global leader in MMA production, will employ its
latest proprietary production technology, LiMA (‘Leading in Methacrylates’) in
the Bay City plant. The new plant will be the first to implement Roehm’s unique
LiMA technology on a large industrial scale. Once completed, the new plant will
produce 250,000 metric tons of MMA annually and create 70 direct jobs.
“Our new MMA plant will strengthen Roehm’s technological leadership
and further expand our leading market position,” said Helio Takahashi, Project Director
at Roehm. “Shaw’s deep modular experience will contribute to ensuring on-budget
execution with the quality we trust.”
“We’re extremely pleased to provide our premier module and pipe
fabrication services for a project that contributes to expanding of our
client’s leading market position,” said Shaw President and CEO Mike Childers.
“As our clients seek to reduce their environmental impact, Shaw stands ready to
assist as trusted partners in bringing new process plant technology to fruition.”
For Shaw, this award affirms the company’s position as a
leader in the pipe and module fabrication industry. In 2020, a new ownership
group and management team acquired and revived the former company’s 2.2 million
square feet of fabrication and manufacturing capacity. Today, the company is a
premier engineering, procurement, and fabrication company with a global
footprint of world-class pipe and module fabrication facilities, and boasts the
ability to provide turnkey project execution services.
